GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Greenville officer shot a man with a knife in each hand after he tried to take an employee hostage in an auto parts store.
Police spokesman Johnathan Bragg said the suspect first tried to steal a man's bicycle around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators say the man then ran into a Pep Boys and put a knife to a worker's throat, but she escaped without being harmed.
Authorities say officers demanded the man put down the knives but he refused.
Bragg says one of the officers shot the suspect because he feared for his own life and the safety of others in the store.
The suspect survived. His name has not been released. The officers have been placed on administrative leave as the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
