Mayor teaches second graders about local government

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Second graders at Eagle Nest Elementary School got a lesson in local government Tuesday from the city's mayor.

Mayor Keith Summey talked to the students about his role as an elected official in North Charleston.

Summey said he used the opportunity to highlight the importance of the smaller things, such as being yourself and respecting others.

"I remember the first speaking engagement I had was third grade. It starts early and you don't forget those things," he said. "This is an opportunity for them to take advantage of the little things now that can turn into bigger things later."
