Memorial planned for Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson

      NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A memorial service is scheduled to remember a former Charleston County School District Superintendent.

      Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson passed away last week after a battle with lung cancer at the age of 55.

      Most recently she served as the Deputy Chancellor for Instructional Support and Educational Accountability for the state of Michigan.The public memorial service will be held Friday at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston.The service is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at 7936 Rivers Avenue. Funeral arrangements are still incomplete at this point, according to the Fielding Home for Funerals.Among those scheduled to speak at the service are Senator Robert Ford, Charleston NAACP President Dot Scott and CCSD School Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley. A member of the planning committee said it would be a program "comprised of words, art and song" with "musical{}and artistic renderings that will express the passion she maintained about education and what{}is needed to make a difference in the{}lives of our children."{}Dr. Goodloe Johnson was the first African American woman to serve as superintendent in Charleston County.
