MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV)--For the very first time, the town of Moncks Corner celebrates the holiday season with its own version of the festival of lights. The 'Celebrate the Season' light display officially kicked off Friday at the main entrance to Santee Cooper located at 1 Riverwood Drive.
"We had really been looking for something that we could do in the area that would bring people and also let them enjoy the season here without driving all the way to James Island," stated Bill McCall, Santee Cooper CEO.
The display features thousands of lights along a one-mile drive through Santee Cooper and Old Santee Canal Park. All are energy-efficient LED lights, which are 90: more efficient than traditional lights. The lights are all also powered by wind, solar and landfill gas energy produced by Santee Cooper.
"We feel good that we can not only have the light and enjoy them, but we can do it in an environmentally pleasing manner," stated McCall.
On weekends, the lights aren't the only things visitors will enjoy.
"You can come and enjoy the arts. You can roast marshmallows and they have hot chocolate. So it's going to be a great time for people to get together, get excited about Christmas and also enjoy one another. People you haven't seen in a while, you can get together and have a great time," stated McCall.
Centered at the Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner, 'Celebrate the Season' will include a daily driving tour through larger-than-life animated light displays. There are more than fifty in all. Holiday fairs on the weekends will feature concerts and other live entertainment, food, craft shows and demonstrations.
Driving tours are from 6-9 p.m. The weekend Holiday Fair begins December 3. The price to view the light displays is $5 per vehicle. All the money raised will go toward the United Way and the Berkeley County Museum.
McCall says he hopes to make this an annual event.
