CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Another record-breaking class is expected to matriculate at The Citadel on Saturday, school officials said Tuesday.
According to the school, the freshman class at the military college has numbered more than 700 for the last six years.
"We had 2,958 applications this year -- the most we've ever had," said Admissions Director Lt. Col. John Powell. "Students today are savvy. They're looking for value, and the combination of leadership training and academics is an attractive opportunity."
According to The Citadel, minority applicants have increased 27 percent from 2012, and the number of South Carolina residents applying to the school jumped 24 percent in two years.
"A Citadel education is more than just a degree," said Powell. "It's the road that students who are determined to succeed take to become leaders."
