MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Southern Season, a gourmet foods retailer, opens its doors Thursday morning with a grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting with Mayor Billy Swails.

The new 44,000-square-foot facility holds over 70,000 gourmet food items as well as a restaurant. The restaurant opens Thursday for lunch and dinner. On Friday, it will open for breakfast.

The store offers items and ingredients from across South Carolina and the world, cooking equipment and gadgets, 3,000 wines and 300 craft beers. Southern Season also offers gourmet chocolates with house-made truffles and 200 coffee and tea varieties.

"We don't sell eggs. We don't sell milk. We don't sell the staples," said Southern Season President Brian Fauver. "This is not where you fill your weekly list. This is where you come tofind the best in food. All those speciality ingredients, all those kitchen tools. Some people call us a hardware store for foodies because if you can do it in the kitchen, we got it."

To celebrate the store's Mt. Pleasant opening, there will be weeks of specials and events sure to turn locals and visitors alike into loyal Southern Season shoppers.

Daily specials are offered to help customers utilize each of the store's separate departments, such as the coffee bar, concierge service and deli. From Monday, September 9 to Thursday, September 19, enjoy the following grand opening specials:

  • Mondays: buy a large cup of coffee, get a free mini scone
  • Tuesdays: free courier service in the greater Charleston area for all orders placed by end of day Monday
  • Wednesdays: free gift wrap for any purchases
  • Thursdays: buy two sides at the deli and get a third free (from an approved list)

The celebration concludes on Sunday, September 22, with a $10 Lowcountry boil benefiting Share the Food Foundation, beer from a Palmetto Brewery, and family-friendly activities such as a blindfolded jellybean flavor tasting contest, Moon Pie eating competition, create your own candy bar station (for children under 16) and a Southern Season scavenger hunt (for children under 12).

The night ends on a bright note - meet and greet your local fireman, tour a local fire truck and celebrate with sparklers in the parking lot beginning at 7 p.m. Don't miss your chance to welcome Southern Season to the neighborhood!
