MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - Mount Pleasant town officials will host on Thursday evening a pair of open house meetings to allow citizens to chime in on a comprehensive town plan.
"We have been working with the Planning Commission since the fall," said Christiane Farrell, the director of planning and development for the Town of Mount Pleasant. "We've had eight or nine meetings where they have been reviewing the whole plan, which includes nine different elements which we are required to address by the state of South Carolina."
The plan helps manage the physical and economic growth, while also creating a vision for how town officials would like to see the town develop.
The plan tackles land use, housing, transportation, cultural resources, natural resources, economics, population, community facilities and priority investment.
"Each one of those has goals on sort of what the vision is for the town," said Farrell. "What are our strategies for how to accomplish those goals and finally, specific action items for how to implement whatever those strategies and those goals may be."
This year's plan is an update to the plan adopted in 2009. Some of the elements from five years ago have already been achieved and are now being implemented.
"A big one was part of the transportation element and that was to adopt a bicycle and pedestrian master plan. And, we did do that just a couple of years ago," said Farrell.
Another achievement was the development of Coleman Boulevard. Farrell says that project has been in the plan since the 1980s.
"The pedestrian-friendly environment, the walkable community and the mixed-use that you are really starting to see on Coleman now," said Farrell.
The meetings will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. in two locations:
