MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Mount Pleasant Historical Commission has just launched a smartphone app that they hope will provide a bridge to help a technologically savvy and younger audience recognize the past.

"The Town's history is now at your fingertips. You can explore historic places and take self-guided walking tours, find interesting people, places and events in Mount Pleasant that have impacted the African American narrative," said Historical Commission Chairman Jose Hernandez.

The Historical Commission will officially launch the app during an event at the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site Tuesday morning.

"The launch of this exciting new app coincides with the kick-off of our Gullah Heritage Celebration," said Charles Pinckney National Historic NPS Superintendent Tim Stone. "The National Park Service, in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant, is sponsoring a series of free cultural programs at Charles Pinckney National Historic site every Saturday at 2 p.m. during March 2014. I invite residents and visitors to explore our historical narrative both with the new app and a visit to our site."

The app, called 'Mount Pleasant Historical' is free to Android and iPhone users.

The app also features more than 70 stories enabled by your GPS location with information on areas including{} the Yorktown, Boone Hall Plantation and other historic sites.

"The ability for the app to direct users to the exact location of a historical point in Town is simply amazing," said Chris Haynes, of the Town's Planning Department. "Users can read about that location and view historical photos and media which can really bring the history to life. People often drive by the Town's historical markers every day and may not realize it or have the time to pull over and view the marker. Now they can get on the website or pull up the app on their smartphone and read the text of that marker, view historic photos, or take a walking tour of related sites. It's truly remarkable!"

Android users can find the app by clicking here.

The Apple app is also available in iTunes by clicking here.
