MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - Mount Pleasant District 2 board officials say they are forming a Community Advistory Team to provide input on rezoning issues.
Two options for rezoning were proposed at a November 1 meeting and an online community survey was created to gauge reaction and gather information.
The board has decided that waiting to rezone until after the new Jennie Moore Elementary School and the new Laing Middle School are completed is not the best decision due to current overcrowding.
A meeting schedule for the advisory team will be posted to the public in the near future.
Board officials say their intent is to have rezoning maps defined on or before June 1, 2013.
The full statement from Chairperson Marty Belk with the District 2 Board is below:
"The Constituent District Two Board is aware of the Mount Pleasant community's desire to embrace a rezoning plan that is fair for everyone and at the same time deals with school overcrowding, traffic patterns and the socio-economic distribution of students. It has been determined
by the District 2 Board that waiting to rezone until the new Jennie Moore Elementary School and the new Laing Middle School are completed is not in the best interest of the District 2 students due to overcrowding in our schools. Our goal is to continue to ensure that all concerned parents and community members are offered the opportunity to provide feedback.
At the community meeting on November 1, we proposed two options and created an online community survey to gauge reaction and gather information. As a follow up, the District 2 Board is forming a Community Advisory Team. This group will meet with the constituent board members at the board's discretion to provide input on rezoning issues relevant to their areas of expertise. A meeting schedule will be publicly posted in the near future.
The composition of the Community Advisory Team is as follows: District 2 Constituent Board members (5), Associate Superintendent of the Elementary Learning Community (1), Associate Superintendent of the Secondary Learning Community (1), Mount Pleasant City Planner (1), Mount Pleasant Traffic Director (1), Former District 2 Board member Lisa Short(1), School Improvement Council representatives from each elementary and middle school (11), Robert Olson as CCSD staff liaison.
Our intent is to have rezoning maps defined on or before June 1, 2013 and to implement these changes for the 2014-2015 school year. The Constituent Board appreciates the community involvement through the survey participation, emails, and the many comments we have received. We look forward to developing a plan that will work for all District 2 constituents."
