Mt.Pleasant town councilman arrested for DUI

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCIV) -- Mt. Pleasant town council member John Burn was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last night, according to a police report.{}

The Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to a two-car vehicle collision in the area of Coleman Boulevard and Fairmont Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say Burn rear-ended a car that was stopped at a traffic light.

"The responding officer detected the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Burn's person and through his investigation probable cause was developed to charge Burn with Driving Under the Influence," the report stated.

Once at the Mt. Pleasant police department, police say Burn refused a Breathalyzer test.{}

The 52-year-old town councilman was released on bond{}Sunday morning and is expected in court next month.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving issued a statement on Burn's arrest Monday morning.

"We are saddened to see that a local community leader has used poor judgement and committed this crime. He or the people he hit could have been killed.{}DUI does not discriminate. No matter who you are, if you drink or do drugs, do not drive," said Kelly Martin deHay. "I commend the Mount Pleasant Police Department for their dedication to prevent this crime and for their integrity. MADD is here to support the victims of this 100 percent{}preventable crime, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving."
