Highway 78 reopens after mulch fire contained

LADSON, S.C. (WCIV) - A mulch fire at a business shut down for several hours a section of Highway 78 in Ladson while firefighters run water hoses across the roadway. The highway reopened around 4:45 p.m.

According to North Charleston fire officials, there was a fire call at the Ladson Woods Recycling company around 1:30 p.m. Three fire agencies responded to the fire.

The pile has to be dismantled to be fully put out, officials said.

Officials say the fire has been contained, but would likely take several hours to a few days to fully extinguish.

Fire officials are asking people in the area to slow down and stay cautious in the area because of the number of crews and fire trucks in the area.

      There are no reported injuries.

The Red Cross has sent a team of people to help firefighters and emergency responders recover from the heat. According to the Red Cross, there are 150 emergency responders at the fire.

Officials could be seen clearing all lanes of Highway 78 around 6 a.m. Friday.
