Multi-vehicle accident on I-26 shuts down traffic Wednesday

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 26 shut down traffic for about 90 minutes Wednesday afternoon.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, two tractor trailers and five cars were involved in the accident shortly before 3:30 p.m.Two of the drivers were taken by EMS to Medical University Hospital, officials said.

Diesel fuel was spilled on the interstate and crews had to put down sand on the two innermost lanes to soak it up. One of the cars was on fire, but crews were quickly able to extinguish it.

Lanes were reopened to traffic around 4:45 p.m.

Highway Patrol officials have not said who or what caused the accident.
