MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A solid summer season and a busy fall have washed away doubts about tourism on South Carolina's Grand Strand following a soggy spring.
Taylor Damonte of Coastal Carolina's Center for Resort Tourism tells The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that after a wet spring, tourism has bounced back in recent months and will have record occupancy for the year.
From January through the mid-October, lodging occupancy is up 2.3 percent compared to last year. It's also up 1.3 percent compared with 2006, the peak year for occupancy before the Great Recession.
Damonte says the industry has recovered from the downturn. South Carolina's $16.5 billion tourism industry is centered in Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand.
