NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Former Charleston County sheriff's deputy Eddie Driggers has been selected as the city's next police chief.

Mayor Keith Summey confirmed Wednesday that Driggers had been chosen to succeed Chief Jon Zumalt, who announced his retirement in late October.

Driggers retired from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office in 2006 after 30 years working in law enforcement. In 2008, he joined the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy.

The chaplaincy provides pastoral care and counseling for families of first responders.

Driggers said Wednesday he is "humbled."

Driggers will be introduced to the North Charleston City Council at the group's regular meeting Thursday night.

A news conference has been scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. to introduce him to the public.
