      NAACP gives Senator Tim Scott a failing grade

      By Ava Wilhite awilhite@abcnews4.com

      Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) --{}Now that he's been sworn in as a U.S. Senator, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is giving Tim Scott a final grade of "F" for his voting record and support of Civil Rights.

      "We have Republicans that believe in Civil Rights and unfortunately, he is not one of them," said Ben Jealous, the NAACP's national president. {}

      Scott told Fox News he disagrees with the statement made by the organizations president.

      "I think it's ridiculous," said Scott.

      First Vice President of the Charleston NAACP chapter Rev. Joe Darby says the grade is based solely on his voting record.

      "I think only a couple of times maybe one or two, he voted with what the organization perceived as in line with the organization's agenda," said Darby.

      Darby said the NAACP does not give grades based on color and it would be ignorant to think so. Scott told Fox News that despite his "F" grade, he will return to a place where he received some A's.{}

      "In the next two weeks, I'll speak at my high school, Stall High School. Go Warriors," he said.

      Stall High School principal Kim Wilson said Scott's oath of office was played for every student to watch.{}

      "It's a great honor I think, for the school and the community, and our kids are so excited about knowing somebody that graduated from their alma mater that has gone on and been successful," said Wilson.

      Wilson said as a high school student Scott struggled at first but by graduation he had turned into an excellent student.

      "He can give these kids a sense of hope and encouragement and say, 'Hey listen, I can do it. You can do it.' Sometimes that's all you need," said Wilson. "He's paved the road for all these kids to be able to do the same thing. They may think maybe I can be a senator or maybe I can be a congressman." {}
