NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The North Charleston Fire Department responded to reports of two fires, both of them at local businesses.

The first was called in just after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Charleston Inn and Suites on Dorchester Road.{}

"A quick thinking maintenance employee heard a smoke alarm in one of the rooms, investigated and found a small fire at an electrical outlet," said NCFD spokesman Bianca Sancic in a release. "He called 911 and used a fire extinguisher and contained the fire to the outlet and air conditioning unit."{}

Sancic said the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

The second fire was reported around 2:30 Monday morning at Caliente Bar and Grill on Remount Road.

A spokesman for the fire department says first arriving units saw heavy smoke and flames at the back of the building but the fire was contained to the outside with minimal damage to the business.

The report says three kittens were also rescued from an abandoned pool table behind the building and turned over to the Charleston Animal Society. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
