Coroner: Former nun killed after being hit by driver

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A woman died after she was hit by a vehicle near Dorchester and Ashley Phosphate roads Monday night, said officials with the North Charleston Police Department.

On Tuesday, Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the woman as 71-year-old Barbara Ann Wisdom.

Nisbet said Wisdom moved to North Charleston two months ago after serving 25 years as a nun in New York. She has a brother and sister, who are twins, Nisbet said. She has not children and was never married.

Officials said Wisdom was standing on the edge of Dorchester Road near the CVS Pharmacy when the 4-door sedan hit her.

She was transported to the hospital in critical condition and died later that night, officials said.

Officials said the driver was a habitual offender. Police later identified the driver as Kevin Larone Ivery, of Peppercorn Lane.

Ivery was arrested and charged with driving under suspension. Officials said more charges could be added. Police said Ivery was expected to go through bond court on Tuesday.

Ivery has a long arrest record that dates back to 2005. Charges range from disturbing schools to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine near a school. He's picked up a collection of drug and alcohol violations as well as being in possession of a stolen gun, records show.
