CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's a day tax procrastinators dread. April 15 is deadline day for tax returns. Luckily, you have until midnight to meet the deadline.
But if it is still a little overwhelming, there is a center in town to help you with free tax assistance.
Prosperity Centers work with Palmetto Goodwill, Trident United Way, and Family Services to help people obtain financial stability.
Manger of Prosperity Center, Walter Simmons, says the organization has helped at least 800 people this year with their tax returns and have helped residents save about $50,000.
"We have a lot of people come that haven't filed taxes in two to three years and we do back taxes up to 2011," Walter Simmons said. "So yes, you can come have your back taxes filed and we have people come in and get thousands of dollars."
Even though it is deadline day, the Prosperity Centers in Dorchester and Berkeley County will be open all day Tuesday, April 15. Citizens in need of help are asked to bring proof of income, tax documents, and photo identification with them. Simmons said it is best to call 2-1-1 to find the center closest to you and to make an appointment.
"It's a free service. If you are debating, come see if you need to get your taxes filed," Simmons said. "If you have questions about it, call and we can put you in the right direction."
The free tax service is available to individuals with an income under $65,000 and to family households making less than $95,000.
