HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Volunteers in Medicine clinic on Hilton Head Island has a new executive director.
The Beaufort Gazette reports that Dr. Raymond Cox began his new job Monday. He replaces Dr. Frank Bowen, who retired last year after 12 years as medical director of the clinic.
Volunteers in Medicine was founded almost 20 years ago when a third of the people who lived on Hilton Head Island had no access to health care. It provided a way for retired medical workers including doctors, nurses and dentists to continue practicing on a voluntary, part-time basis to help those in need.
The clinic has become a model for others nationwide.
The clinic now has 14 exam rooms and handles more than 33,000 patient visits a year.
