NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A North Charleston company was awarded a $10 million contract to make airfield security upgrades at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.
Facilities Engineering Command Southeast awarded the contract to HITT Contracting, Inc., of North Charleston, it announced on Wednesday. The company will handle airfield security upgrades for the base.
"The P-472 Airfield SecurityUpgrades are another key component in preparing MCAS Beaufort for transition tothe F-35 Lightning II," said MCAS Beaufort Commanding Officer Col. Brian C. Murtha. "These upgrades will support the F-35 program'sinfrastructure needs and ensure we continue to vigorously protect our nation'sresources."
The work will include new security fencing, motorized vehicle gates, turnstiles, communication lines, parking, as well as the rerouting of Moore Street and the relocation of Drayton Street.
The new security fencing is required for the Air Station to house the F-35, officials said.
Work is expected to take about a year.
