CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Neighbors say they are terrified after a man carjacked and raped a woman in the backyard of a vacant home in West Ashley.

"I'm scared. I'm literally scared," said the woman who came to the victim's rescue after the incident. She was too afraid to share her name or show her face.

"I was out in the backyard, actually walking toward my grandson to talk to him about something on the car. And, all of a sudden we heard 'help, help, help, please help me, I was raped'," she said.

A spokesman with the sheriff's office said the incident happened at around 3 p.m. on Monday when a black male forced his way into a car at West Ashley Primary Care at West Ashley Medical Center.

The victim told officials the man made her drive to an abandoned house on Sunnyvale Road, where he assaulted her and then took her car.

The car was later recovered near the Walmart store on Ashley Crossing Drive.

The suspect is described as approximately 5-foot-8 with a medium build. Officials say he is bald, has a scruffy beard and gaps between his front teeth. He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt and black pants, on foot, in the area of West Ashley Primary Care.
