Police release IDs of Walterboro bank robbery suspects

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Colleton County Detention Center released on Monday the identities of the two men arrested and accused of robbing a Walterboro bank last week.{}

Ramone Karim Drew and Dante Robert Drew were charged with kidnapping and robbery with a deadly weapon. Ramone Drew was also charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and Dante Drew was charged with shoplifting.

The two suspects were taken into police custody after authorities said they held up a Walterboro bank and led police on a chase Friday morning.

Walterboro Police Chief Otis Rhodes said two men robbed Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union on Jeffries Boulevard around 10 a.m.

He said five people were in the bank at the time. No one was injured.

"The tellers of the bank cooperated and gave them what they wanted," Rhodes said.

How much cash was taken during the robbery has not yet been released.

Rhodes said officers were already in the area and began to pursue the vehicle two blocks from the bank.

"We were fortunate people saw them and gave a good description," he said.

The suspects led responding officers down Sidney Road.Rhodes said there was an attempt by the suspects to switch vehicles at one point. The car came to a halt on Philips Road after Rhodes said one of the tires blew out on its own.

"One guy jumped out, but he was caught. The second guy was caught in the vehicle," Rhodes said.

Gun shots were fired during the incident, but Chief Rhodes was unsure who fired the shots and when.

"I don't know if the guy shot at the officer or if he shot at him," he said.

Rhodes confirmed there was a bullet hole in the suspect's vehicle.The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the matter.

Rhodes said the gun used in the robbery and the money were recovered on the scene.
