NCPD: One dead after early morning shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person is dead after an early morning argument led to shots being fired, said officials with the North Charleston police.Derrick McKinley, 24, of James Island is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.Police responded to the 2600 block of Ferrara Drive at about 1 a.m. on Saturday to reports of shots fired.

On the scene, officials said officers found Dashawn Zellars, 21, of North Charleston, as well as McKinley, who was walking on Accabee Road with a handgun.According to McKinley, he and the Zellars, along with two other people, got into an argument, officials said.Officials said McKinley told officers Zellars began firing at him and that's when McKinley went to his vehicle to get a gun. McKinley told officers he shot at Zellars before running away.Zellars was taken to MUSC where he later died.

Police are still investigating the incident.
