Orangeburg sheriff: Man kills home intruder, will not be charged

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man was shot and killed in Orangeburg after he forced his way into a home and the homeowner who pulled the trigger will not be charged, according to the sheriff.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said investigators determined that 21-year-old DeShawn Randolph broke into a Kings Road home sometime after 11 p.m. Sunday, May 26.

The homeowner grabbed a firearm and fired several shots at Randolph, fatally wounding the man, Ravenell said.

"Our investigation indicates that the victim in this case is the homeowner. He was inside his home on Sunday night when the suspect, DeShawn Randolph, forced entry into the residence through a window at the back of the home without consent.," said Ravenell in a release Tuesday. "Autopsy results, evidence, and witness statements support the victim's rights according to South Carolina's Protection of Persons and Property Act. Unless contradicting evidence is developed, the homeowner will not be charged in this shooting."
