Palmetto Project receives $215,500 grant

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - The AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation's Connections for Cardiovascular Health program today announced a grant of $215,510 to the Palmetto Project to support its Heart & Soul initiative.

Program coordinator Carrie Whipper says this will allow the program to expand beyond Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

"We want to have Williamsburg and Georgetown County and hopefully double the people we may be able to serve each month," she said.

Heart & Soul was created by the Palmetto Project in 1997 as a disease prevention and health education initiative aimed at South Carolina's soaring rates of preventable heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.

"We go to food distribution sites and do screenings and education to identify participants for our program," Whipper said.

They also help them arrange doctor's appointments and set them up with medical medications and other services.
