CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- An online petition focused on former College of Charleston student Sarah Jones is going viral.

The online petition calls for Jones, 27 of West Columbia, to be added to the 'In-Memoriam' portion of the Academy Awards ceremony this weekend. As of early Wednesday morning, over 19,000 people had already signed the online petition directed at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

A Facebook page and Twitter profile have also been created to promote a campaign dubbed 'Slates for Sarah.' Movie crews around the world are marking movie slates with the words in her honor. The 'Slates for Sarah' Facebook page already has nearly 25,000 'likes.'

Officials say Jones was killed after being hit by a train in Savannah on Thursday. Jones was on-set working as a camera assistant during the filming of 'Midnight Rider.' Jones was also a student majoring in Communications and Film Studies at the College of Charleston.

Multiple events are being held to honor the slain CofC student on Wednesday. A memorial is scheduled for 4 p.m. inside Ashland United Methodist Church in Columbia. A celebration of life event is slated to begin at 5 p.m. inside the Saluda River Club in Lexington.{}
