SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Pinewood Prep seventh grader is stepping on to the national stage and competing in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C.
Krish Patel earned his spot in the finals after competing against 100 students from across the state, representing South Carolina and Summerville for the third year in a row. He is one of 54 finalists who will travel to the nation's capital to compete.
According to a release from Pinewood Prep, Patel also won $100, a DVD set, and an all-expenses paid trip to D.C.
The final round will be held May 22 at Washington's National Theater and will be hosted by Alex Trebek, the school said.
If Patel wins, he earns a $25,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, the school reported. A second- or third-place victory will secure a $15,000 or $10,000 scholarship, respectively.
The national winner will also get an all-expenses paid trip to the Galapagos Islands as a member of the National Geographic Endeavour, Pinewood Prep's release said.
