Planning commission rejects project near Belle Hall
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A planned retail development in a busy area of Mount Pleasant will remain just a proposal. Mount Pleasant's planning commission rejected Wednesday night the addition of a new project across the street from the Belle Hall shopping center.
That means it's back to the drawing board for developers of the 16-acre shopping and apartment complex along Long Point Road.
The members of the planning commission all agreed that the conceptual plan should not be approved.
At the packed meeting that started at 5 p.m. and still had people lining up to speak at nearly 10 p.m., not one person spoke in the plan's favor.
But dozens spoke against it. Again and again, Mount Pleasant residents' biggest concerns for the area were traffic and safety. Many said they wanted to see those issues addressed before another development takes root.
Developers can come back with a revised plan that may better fit the area. However, without addressing traffic problems in an already congested area, many people think adding more homes and shopping is not in the best interest of the city or its current residents.
