Plans made to save oldest structure on Hilton Head
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Plans are being made to preserve the oldest intact structure on Hilton Head Island.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1rcU3xN ) that the Baynard Mausoleum in the Zion Chapel of Ease cemetery was built in 1846 but is in danger of collapsing. The limestone slabs on the roof are supported now by cracked sandstone walls and rotted wood.
The Heritage Library Foundation is working to raise $175,000 to preserve the structure.
Plans call for stabilizing the structure as well as putting a clear door on it along with a new fence and benches around it. The foundation hopes it will be a place where people can learn the island's history.
Planter William Eddings Baynard built it in a small cemetery where two Revolutionary War patriots are buried.
