Police: Citizens nab West Ashley purse snatcher

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Several private citizens captured a man after police say he stole a woman's purse in front of a West Ashley business on Tuesday.

After his arrest, police determined the man was also involved in a burglary on Albemarle Road earlier in the evening, officials said.

According to police, 20-year-old Dustin Andrew Carroll, of Columbia, was charged with purse snatching and second-degree burglary. Police say Carroll is also wanted by Columbia police for armed robbery.

Police say a woman walked out of a Dollar Tree store on Sam Rittenberg Boularvard around 6 p.m. Tuesday and a man in bloody clothes asked her for money. She handed him $5 and he grabbed her purse, police said.

Several people saw Carroll grab the purse and they chased him down and held him until police arrived, according to a report.

While police were arresting Carroll, they determined he matched the description of another burglary on Albemarle Road in which a man stole a gun case and some jewelry from a home.

Police are still investigating the incidents.
