Police: Ex-Ill. Marine slain during botched holdup

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a former southwestern Illinois man was shot to death in South Carolina during his alleged attempt with a fellow Marine to rob a drug dealer.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 20-year-old Jerrit Timberson, formerly of Fairview Heights, was killed Friday night.

Investigators say Timberson and 18-year-old Kelsey Dent, a Marine formerly from Belleville, pulled fake pistols while allegedly trying to rob a man during a marijuana deal in Beaufort, S.C. But the alleged dealer pulled a real gun and shot Timberson.

That dealer and Dent are charged, and Timberson's wife is accused of helping plan the robbery.

Dent doesn't have a listed home telephone number.

The Marines say Timberson was an aviation supply specialist who enlisted in the Marines in 2012 and was stationed in Beaufort.
