CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 3-year-old boy was placed in protective custody after doctors at Roper Saint Francis called Charleston police for a possible case of child abuse.

According to the police report, the child had "several bruises to his back, left side of face, right side of forehead, chest area, left arm and left leg." The report says doctors also found the victim had liver lacerations. The injuries were reported on June 23.

The report says the boy's 23-year-old mother told doctors he had gotten his injuries from falling near a pond by their home and that she hadn't noticed any of the boy's bruises. She had taken him to the hospital for loss of appetite and vomiting.

Police say she also said the bruises may be a result from the child visiting his father who lives with his parents in Goose Creek just a few days prior.

Now, four months later, the mother, Gabrielle Alyse Bankston, has been arrested and charged with allowing/inflicting great bodily injury upon a child. She was arrested by Charleston police Tuesday at the Regal Cinemas on Mall Drive.

A judge set bond at $250,000 for Bankston on Wednesday.
