NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- North Charleston investigators arrested a second suspect in connection to the armed robbery and murder of 20-year-old Maraelius Birdsong outside of the Appian Way Apartments complex. Jontae Demetrius Davis, 17, turned himself in to police headquarters Tuesday afternoon and has been charged with armed robbery and murder.At about 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, officers responded to Appian Way Apartments on Patriot Boulevard. for reports of a male victim being shot during a robbery.Maraelius Birdsong was found lying on the ground and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to MUSC and later died.During the investigation, detectives learned Birdsong arrived at the apartment complex to deliver a pizza. Birdsong went to the address where the pizza was to be delivered and learned from the residents they did not order any food. As Birdsong was returning to his vehicle, according to witnesses, he was approached by a black male, robbed and shot.Witnesses saw two black males flee the area after the gunfire was heard. Officers later found Stephawn Sherrod Brown near the scene of the crime.
Police say they traced the number used to buy the pizza to a cell phone Brown had when he was arrested.
Investigators say they found pizza in Brown's kitchen and in a dresser drawer in a bedroom of his apartment.
Brown is currently being held at the jail in Summerville. A municipal judge set Brown's bond for two charges; possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime at $100,000 and for the armed robbery charge, $200,000. The judge could not set bond for the murder charge. That can only be set by a circuit court judge.
