NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- More than a day after a shooting, people could still see the police paint in the strip mall parking lot where they said Chad Cochran killed Michael Knight.

Knight's mother Sherry attended a bond hearing Monday. She was accompanied by many of her son's family members, including his 13-month-old son. She told reporters Michael Knight was raising his son as a single father.

Police charged Cochran with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. They said the suspect kicked Michael Knight in the North Park Grill parking lot early Sunday morning. The victim responded by punching back; that was when Cochran fired his gun.

"He didn't deserve this," Sherry Knight said. "He wasn't a bad guy. He didn't do drugs. He didn't do anything. He didn't even drink. He didn't even like drinking. But he did that night only because he was depressed."

She said her son had just found out his girlfriend was cheating on him.

"His brother said come on let's go out and have fun tonight. He said, 'Get your mind off it,'" she said.

Knight said her son did not know the suspect. Police said Cochran fired once. Michael Knight died later at the hospital.

The judge on Monday did not issue a bond amount for Cochran.
