Police officer shot; 3 suspects taken into custody

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Early Saturday morning Charleston County EMS transported a North Charleston police officer to MUSC.

Shortly before 3 a.m. officers responded to a home on South Allen Drive for a report of a theft.

Officers spoke with the victim, who gave them the description of the suspect. Then, an officer near the El Cheapo convenience store at Dorchester Road and South Allen saw the suspect nearby. The officer approached and the suspect immediately opened fire on the officer, striking him twice.

The officer was transported to MUSC with non life threatening injuries. The officer did not fire his weapon.

The officer was possibly shot in the chest and leg. EMS spokesperson Don Lundy says the officer was admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

North Charleston Police Department spokesman Spencer Pryor confirmed the officer was wearing a vest, per department policy.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6'2", skinny, wearing all black clothing, headband, with shoulder length dreads.

Pryor said shortly before 6 p.m. three men were taken into custody in connection to the shooting. They were located at a Barony Park Circle home.

The investigation is on going and charges are expected to be filed against all three suspects.
