Police say a victims' screams scared off robbery suspects

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston Police arrested two men after a burglary and attempted armed robbery that happened Thursday at a Fleming Road apartment in West Ashley.

Police say the robbery happened around 10 p.m. when two men forced their way into the apartment and demanded money from one of the victims.

Investigators said an argument began between one of the victims and a suspect, which escalated into a brief scuffle. The victim saw one of the suspects reach toward his waistband as if he was reaching for a handgun.

That's when one of the victims began screaming, police said, causing the suspects to run out of the apartment and leave the scene in an SUV.

The victims were able to call police and provide dispatch with a description of the vehicle.

About five minutes later, officers say they saw an SUV at Folly Road and Hunley Avenue which matched the description of the suspects' vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated and the suspects were taken into custody.

Tradd Bethea Hook, 32,{} is charged with attempted armed robbery, burglary in the first degree and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Alexander Spotswood Hassell, 31, is charged with attempted armed robbery, burglary in the first degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and unlawful possession of a handgun.

Hassell's bond was set at $300,000; Hook's was set at $250,000.
