Police: Someone sprayed pepper spray at downtown Charleston club on Jan. 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- New Year's revelers at a downtown Charleston club rang in the new year with pepper spray in their eyes.

According to Charleston police, someone sprayed pepper spray at midnight on New Year's Eve while on the dance floor at Club Pantheon.

Officers searched the crowd for a suspect but did not find anyone.

According to the club's Facebook page, managers were preparing to drop $3,000 on to the dance floor when the pepper spray was used.

"It is sad that one stupid individual could be so thoughtless as to ruin this night not only the hundreds of people that were celebrating the new year but also the massive amount of money that our hard working staff and owner lost tonight," the post reads.

The club is offering a $1,000 reward for the identity of the person.

Several people were treated by EMS and sent home. The club was then closed for the night, the report states.

No one on the dance floor saw who used the pepper spray.
