CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 14-year-old girl told police she was just getting a pair of earphones from a car outside her home in a gated Daniel Island community when she was sexually assaulted by two men.

According to police, the assault happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Palmetto Place Condominiums off Clements Ferry Road.

The victim told officers two men grabbed her, dragged her to the dog park area and sexually assaulted her.

One of the suspects is described as a black man in his late 20s to 30s with a medium build.

The victim could not describe the second suspect, except to say that he was thinner than the first man.

Police said the suspects were last seen running towards the exit gate of the apartment complex and are believed to have fled further down Jack Primus Road.

Palmetto Place residents said Thursday they had not been alerted to the incident. Palmetto Place management did not return our call Thursday.

Residents said the gated complex is usually quiet, except for the constant noise of trucks approaching a nearby truck stop.

"It is really frightening that we live in a gated community to better protect ourselves and the fact that someone would just come in and grab her and sexually assault her is very scary," said Melissa Mancini, who has lived in Palmetto Place for about a year. "It will certainly affect how I conduct myself, especially after dark in this complex."

She said her boyfriend will accompany her to walk the dog around 10 p.m. She also planned to carry mace, she said.
