Police: Thief breaks into Big Lots via HVAC unit

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- In a burglary that sounds like something out of the movies, police say a man used air conditioning vents to gain access to a store.According to a report from Summerville police, officers responded to the Big Lots on Dorchester Road early Friday morning.None of the officers could find a point of forced entry until they looked on the roof and saw footprints leading from the back near the loading dock to the HVAC unit.Police surmised the burglar gained access to the store's cash room by taking screws off the HVAC's access cover. They said he then pushed the HVACducting from the unit in the ceiling and got in to the store room behind the cash room and cut a hole in the sheet rock.Once inside the room, police say the suspect pulled a filing cabinet from the wall and removed a black bag from behind it.The manager told police he does not know of anything taken from the store but would tell police if he found that anything was missing. The suspect, who was caught on surveillance tape, is described as a white male wearing all black clothing and black gloves. He was also wearing a headband with a light attached. If anyone can identify the suspect, please call the Summerville Police Department at 851-4100 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
