HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Buying an old state port and building an arena for the University of South Carolina Beaufort are among the projects a Beaufort County committee says should be financed with a proposed 1 percent sales tax.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/1j2jmLK) the Capital Project Sales Tax Commission on Wednesday came up with a final list of $221 million in projects that could be financed with the tax expected to raise about $240 million over eight years.
The commission received requests for $600 million in projects.
Projects that made the final cut include buying the old port at Port Royal and money for a convention center and sports arena for the USC Beaufort.
County council must now decide whether to put the sales tax referendum on the November ballot.
