Prescribed burn held on Joint Base
JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A prescribed fire is burning Thursday in in the Eastside Ordnance Area at Joint Base Charleston Weapons Station. The burn is part of a plan by Joint Base Charleston natural resources officials. It started around 10:30 a.m. and will burn until 7 p.m. Officials said that winds from the west,should minimize smoke impacts in immediate area. North Charleston Fire Department officials say smoke was visible around North Rhett, Rivers Avenue and I-526. The fire is coordinated with the South Carolina Forestry Commission and with federal and municipal fire departments. Prescribed fires are used to reduce natural fuel loads present in the woods, enhance timber and wildlife habitat, restore ecosystems and suppress forest diseases and pests.
