President of SC firm arrested on federal charges

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal authorities have arrested the president of a North Charleston company and charged him with exporting goods to Iraq without the proper licenses and making false statements on official government documents.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles said that Markos Baghdasarian made his first appearance Monday before a magistrate judge in Georgia. Nettles said Baghdasarian was arrested Saturday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta before he could board a flight to the United Arab Emirates.

Baghdasarian was president of Delfin Group USA, a Russian-owned producer of synthetic motor oils.

Baghdasarian is accused of engaging in prohibited transactions with customers in Iran, including a government-owned oil company. He's also accused of concealing the export to Iran of aviation engine oils and polymer valued at $850,000.

It's not known if Baghdasarian has an attorney.
