MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- Just after 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 12, a deputy with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office was put in a choke hold by a prisoner at the Berkeley County Detention Center.

According to the incident report, 37-year-old Ronald Reid had been causing trouble since his arrest. Reports state he was found in the interview room with his pants around his ankles and "he had also urinated all over the floor."

Deputies say once a BCSO sergeant removed Reid's leg irons to let him change into an inmate jumpsuit, Reid grabbed the sergeant around the neck and put her in a choke hold from behind.

Deputies tried to reason with Reid who told them he wanted to call his girlfriend. They say once his attention went from the deputies to a phone they had placed within his reach, they took the opportunity to "use reasonable force necessary" to get the sergeant away from Reid and detain him.

Reid is now being charged with taking hostages.
