Proposed SC jellyfish plant looks for another site
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - A company that wants to open a plant to process jellyfish for Asian seafood markets is looking for another site in Beaufort County.
Millenarian Trading Co. said last month it wants to rehabilitate the shrimp docks in Port Royal to bring in jellyfish and put a processing plant in nearby Gardens Corner creating as many as 250 jobs.
But the Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the company is now looking for another site for the processing plant because of concerns that discharges from the Gardens Corner location might harm a nearby creek.
The seafood company wants to catch Cannonball jellyfish, also called jelly balls.
The jellyfish are dried and preserved before being shipped to seafood markets in Asia.
