Rare book found in Charleston vault
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's sat in the vault of the Charleston Library Society for a very, very long time.
Now, a book that's nearly 270 years old is on its way to the College of Charleston. The book's history can be traced back to 1743, when it was written and handed over to become part of the reading collection of planter and diplomat John Mackenzie. He bequeathed the book, and the other nearly 800 books in his collection to the College of Charleston.
They were all being stored in the vault when fire struck in 1778, destroying nearly every last one of Mackenzie's books.
But this one--written on the subject of political parties--survived and has remained stored away.
It will be turned over to officials with the College of Charleston in a ceremony later this week.
