Red Cross in need of disaster volunteers for hurricane season

BLUFFTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Red Cross is looking for more disaster relief volunteers as it prepares for the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season.

The Red Cross is hosting four new volunteer orientations in the Lowcountry in May and June. There are three-hour meetings that start at 6 p.m. on May 21, June 5 and June 17 at 59 Sheridan Park Circle in Bluffton. There is one meeting in Beaufort at the City Hall building on June 3. That meeting also starts at 6 p.m.

"As hurricane season approaches, the need for trained Red Cross volunteers to respond to local and national disasters will increase," said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region. "Because of ongoing disaster training, Red Cross volunteers are always fully prepared and ready to provide immediate relief to people affected by disasters."

Officials said the Red Cross needs additional trained disaster volunteers to be prepared to open over 60 identified shelters in the seven-county area of the Lowcountry.
