Red Cross supports overnight warming center in Williamsburg Co.

KINGSTREE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The American Red Cross is supporting an overnight warming center at the Williamsburg Recreation Center Monday and Tuesday.

According to a release, the Williamsburg Emergency Management requested the warming center for the homeless, elderly and those who may have inadequate heating in their homes.

The center will be open Monday and Tuesday at 2084 Thurgood Marshall in Kingstree from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m.

"We are glad that we can assist Williamsburg Emergency Management by providing cots and blankets as well as drinks and snacks for the warming center," said Nanci Conley, executive director, Coastal SC Chapter, American Red Cross Palmetto SC Region.{} "As temperatures begin to drop we encourage everyone to wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm and to practice fire safety when trying to warm your home."

Red Cross officials said it's important to wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm. Officials said gloves and hats will help prevent losing body heat.

Officials suggest you bring your pets indoors and if they are outdoor pets, they said you should make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and keep their water from freezing.
