Coroner identifies teen who died off Sullivan's Island, 2 others rescued

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A teenager died off the coast of Sullivan's Island near Breach Inlet on Tuesday, the Charleston County Coroner confirmed. Two other teens were rescued.

The coroner has identified the teen as 17-year-old James Williamson of North Charleston.

The Charleston County Rescue Squad was called Tuesday afternoon to Station 28.5 on Sullivan's Island to rescue three swimmers off the coast who were trapped in rough waters.

Four teens were swimming in the ocean shortly before the incident. One of the teens got out of the water to check his cellphone, but when he turned around, he did not see his three friends. After searching the beach, he called 911 and crews responded.

EMS officials said two of the people were in stable condition, but the third was taken to East Cooper Medical Center in critical condition. A fourth teen was taken to East Cooper Medical Center for an injury unrelated to the drowning.

A witness saw the trio swimming in the choppy waters and said it appeared it was too much for the group to handle. The witness said at least one person was given CPR on the beach.

According to dispatch officials, Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad, EMS, Fire and Sheriff's Office boats responded.
