Reservist dies at Joint Base Charleston after fitness test
JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 26-year-old reservist died Saturday after collapsing during an Air Force fitness test at Joint Base Charleston.
According to base officials, Staff Sgt. Richard Spofford died at Trident Medical Center. He was a reservist assigned to the 315th Maintenance Group at Joint Base Charleston.
"The men and women of Joint Base Charleston are deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Spofford," said Col. Scott Sauter, commander of the 315th Airlift Wing. "Richard was an integral part of the 315th family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard's family, friends and co-workers during this difficult time."
Spofford lived in North Charleston. He had been a member of the 315th Airlift Wing since January 2013.
Spofford's funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Joint Base Charleston chapel followed by a burial at Dorchester Memorial Gardens. Officials say full military honors will be given at the graveside.
