Retired Bishop of Diocese of Charleston dies

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- David B. Thompson, retired Bishop of Diocese of Charleston, died this weekend, according to a release from the Diocese of Charleston.

Bishop Thompson was 90 years old. He served as the eleventh bishop from 1990-1999.

Bishop Thompson was born in Philadelphia in 1923.

He moved to Charleston in 1989 when Pope John Paul II appointed the then Monsignor Thompson as Bishop of Charleston. He assumed his new role in February of 1990 when the former bishop retired.

When Bishop Thompson retired in 1999, the release states he golfed and continued to serve the dioceses. He also served in weekend ministry at Christ Our King Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
